Compo : Au Cœur des Volcans

Composition for the Nocta music contest :

(Click on the picture to listen)

Composition for the Nocta music contest :

(Click on the picture to listen)

Composition for the Nocta music contest :

(Click on the picture to listen)

Compo : Une Chance Pour La Paix

Composition for the Nocta music contest :

(Click on the picture to listen)

Composition for the Nocta music contest :

(Click on the picture to listen)

Rather a sketchy draft, the introduction drags a bit, and then the action riffs take from the indian kamavardani mode (again!).

Reprise familiale : Gluecklich Zusammen

Orchestral and brightly joyful, a bit static as I lacked time to develop twist and turns.. I'm getting into the bad habit of composing by loops :p

Compo : La Dernière Blague Du Joker

Composition for the Nocta music contest, episode 231 :

(Click on the picture to listen)

Musical Modes: compiled, analysed and compared

After my first attempt in 2009 to review the modes used in modern jazz, I'm deepening the analysis and including the 72 ragas from southern India.

The diagram shows which of the 12 semitones are used to build the musical scale, with colours indicating their natural consonances or tensions with the starting note.

The excel sheet gives all the data and functions.

Here are the 5 pentatonic modes built without semitone interval:

The pentatonic mode of Re# was used for the melody of this 2011 composition.
The Indian raga KamaVardani was used in the last part of this 2015 composition (Krishna talks!), and in this one (descending little devils..)

Compo : La Espero

Esperanto was born in the late 19th century, and traditional customs back then was to give it a flag.. and an anthem! During the 100th congress in Lille in 2015, i've noticed with a friend of mine that the music of this anthem is quite military, a coulour in serious contradiction with the peacefulness of the lyrics.

Here is an arrangement with a new melody, slightly similar to the original, but in a form of waltz:

  12. Embrassez le Fils, craignez sa colère. Heureux qui l’aime !

Voici le chant original, en anglais :

Another choir video , and here a cello version.

(1) Why fum'th in fight the Gentiles spite, in fury raging stout?
Why tak'th in hand the people fond, vain things to bring about?
(2) The Kings arise, the Lords devise, in counsels met thereto,
against the Lord with false accord, against His Christ they go.

(3) Let us they say break down their ray of all their bonds and cords
We will renounce that they pronounce their laws as stately lords
(4) But God of might in heaven so bright Shall laugh them all to scorn
The Lord on hie shall them defy they shall be once forlorn?

(9) With iron rod as mighty God, all rebels shalt thou bruse:
And breake them all in pieces small, as sherdes the potters use
(10) Be wise therfore ye kinges the more, Receive ye wisdomes lore:
Ye judges strong of right and wrong, advise you now before

(11) The Lorde in feare your service beare, with dread to him rejoyce:
Let rages be resist not ye, him serve with joyfull voyce
(12) The sonne kisse ye lest wroth he be, lose not the way of rest:
For when his ire is set on fire, who trust in hym be blest!

L'espoir, ô citoyens, inspire notre horizon.

THẬT BẤT NGỜ - Balkanic rave in Hanoi

With my Belgian band we started this very original Vietnamese song. I especially like the video clip which is a wonderful musical-like take of Vietnamese community life! (2'30'' intro like a movie) The music has a punchy extravagant Balkanic style, and lyrics about crazy newspapers.

Hamauzu - FFX Unreleased illusion: A Sheet Music

Discovered around 2005 thanks to a software extracting video game's sounds, this unreleased track from Masashi Hamauzu for Final Fantasy X might even never appear in the game. It sounds remotely related to the soundtrack song "Illusion", hence its name.

The original song can be heard here (rare record, hot stuff!)

10 years down the line, the able ears of my friend Katchum have at last pierced the mystery of this fantastic harmony. I've put it in sheet music and proposed chord notations.

(On the second page i've not cleaned the alterations (# and b) because I'm bad at that I thought the pitch issue could be solved and then repeat the first page content..)

One bug remains clear, and that might be the reason why the music would not be used in the game: each repetition of the melody lowers the pitch by a semitone.... that means that as the music goes on and on.. the pitch would dip lower and lower.. too bad! (that also doesn't help musicians playing it)

Compo : Chronos

Here is my latest creation, a music composed for the 24h-contest Noctaventure on the topic "Tempus fugit": time flies (when we're having fun). I classify it as an "etude" because of its construction constraint: a Re-Re clock pendulum ostinato, lasting throughout all the score.

The colours and melody evolve through various emotions, following the steps of human life: childhood, youth, then grief, panic on the face of death, confrontation against time, and finally the enlightenment of a teaching bringing peace.

The beautiful surprise and originality of this music is how an Indian melody naturally sprung out from the harmonic evolution, bringing a hypnotic climax to the topic: Krishna in his transcendent form as eternal Time-Spirit.

Here is the PDF music score.
Here is the mp3.

Idea: Universe creation framework

I've been thinking for a couple of years how the ideal creation framework could look like. Of course it depends on the type of creation. In my case, I would like to combine and interweave:

  • Drawings and paintings representing places, events, characters
  • Music, for various places or contexts
  • Texts and poems, describing places, stories, feelings
  • Cooking recipes, technology descriptions

The main building material would be the drawings, forming full-pages of visual environment. On these drawings there would be some URL links. Some would lead to other connected pages (moving to a nearby area, zooming into a particular region, zooming-out to the upper level), while some others would link to content, such as music or recipes, open in popup windows.

In practice, the universe creation would very simple:

  1. Upload a full-page drawing.
  2. Write a text narrative besides it.
  3. Put tags on it like in facebook, with URL linking to content (mp3, pdf, etc.) or to other pages.

The advantage of such framework is to aggregate the creative content into an interconnected system, that can grow organically from any of its parts! The visitor becomes an explorer who somehow interacts with the universe by choosing where to go and what to look at. It is inspired by the RPG-adventure video game style (Zelda, Final Fantasy, etc.).

Ideally, the framework would also feature comment threads on each page to let the visitors give feedback.

Now, comparing to what is available: Facebook allows to easily upload pictures and very intuitively place tags on it, but only to identify peoples. If those tags could contain any URL, that would do it! But no... DotClear allows pages in WHTML format with comments, but the width seems limited to the blog page, and placing the tag on the picture would be difficult...

Any other software suggestions to enable this creative boom? Thanks!
